To make the most of LinkedIn, it’s important to understand how to optimise your profile for success.
This means understanding the importance of keywords and SEO on the platform and how you can use them to reach your target audience.
Optimise your profile with the right keywords
Think about it this way: when people are searching for a service on LinkedIn, what terms are they likely to use?
Make a list of these keywords and then check which of those terms are sprinkled throughout your profile.
The keyword list you come up with might have 30 keywords and maybe you find 20 sprinkled through your profile.
Prioritise which term is the most important that you want people to find you for.
Then work out,where is the most logical position within your profile that this specific term can be a part of.
Steps to find the right keywords to use on your profile
Step 1: Research your industry and target audience. See what terms they're using to find businesses like yours.
Step 2: Use LinkedIn's search bar to see what comes up when you type in different keywords related to your business.
Step 3: Take a look at the profiles of your top competitors. What keywords are they using?
Once you've chosen the right keywords, it's time to start using them on your profile. Here are some places where you can include them:
-Your headline
-Your summary
-Your experience descriptions
-In the skills section of your profile
On LinkedIn you have two audiences to please
The first is the algorithm - if I ran a search and used one of your keywords in my query it'll find you.
The second audience that your business needs to consider is the person searching for you. If they come across a profile and it doesn't make sense, then this is enough of an excuse as any not to continue with their search-and turn back around!
Therefore, include those keywords in sentences that are natural for the reader.
e.g "I help business owners generate sales online using social media".
The right keywords can mean the difference between being found on page 7 or closer to page 1.
Avoid keyword stuffing
If you've ever been tempted to stuff your LinkedIn profile with keywords in an attempt to game the system, resist the urge!
LinkedIn's search algorithm is sophisticated enough to recognise when you're trying to cheat, and you'll be penalised for it.
Besides, using too many keywords makes your profile look spammy and unprofessional.
Instead, choose a few relevant keywords and use them sparingly throughout your profile.
That way, you'll avoid getting penalised by LinkedIn and you'll come across as a credible professional.
